Alex Greene, Founder
Alex founded Red Beard Lumber, LLC in 2006 with his father, Gordon. Alex has since developed Red Beard into a full service custom sawmilling, hardwood flooring, and local wood construction company, while Gordon has concentrated on forest management of the family woodlot, and leading the emerging Zen training center there. Alex has a background in Zen, philosophy, and woodwork that he brings together happily in a company that tries to bring the strength and beauty of natural trees and give them new life in people's homes as structural and aesthetic woodwork. Alex has a love for other natural materials besides wood, and seeks to bring the unique textures and qualities of different materials like clay, straw, and stone into people's homes to create spaces with character, feeling, and vitality. Alex believes that design and building are to be used at the service of the natural materials and their intended function -- that the best design and execution is one that releases the inherent beauty of natural materials into elegant forms that serve their occupants efficiently and comfortably. Alex rejects waste, toxicity, and excessive ornamentation in his work.
